1-5 P.M.: 3 talks, speakers:
Dror Bar-Natan (Hebrew University, Jerusalem)
Title: From Stonehenge to Drinfel'd skipping
all the details
Abstract: See
here.
Hyam Rubinstein (University of Melbourne):
Title: Minimal surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds
Abstract: It is shown that any hyperbolic
3-manifold of finite
volume admits infinitely many distinct immersed closed
minimal surfaces. Minimal surface theory can be used to
give useful lower bounds on the Heegaard genus of
hyperbolic 3-manifolds and information on how Heegaard
genus grows with taking covering spaces (work with
Aitchison and Schultens).
Peter Teichner (UCSD)
Title: Pulling apart 2-spheres in 4-space
Abstract: We show that any number of disjointly
embedded
2-spheres in 4-space can be pulled apart by a link homotopy,
i.e. by a motion in which the 2-spheres stay disjoint but are
allowed to self-intersect. In particular, there is NO
4-dimensional Hopf link.
5:30 P.M.: Party at LIN's
Parking: For visitors from other UC's: Please use your
parking permit.
For
Non-UC visitors: Please identify yourself as coming for
the
Southern California Topology Colloquium or just math
conference
to get a (free) parking permit.
