    • Email is now accessible on all of the workstations; including the lab. 6 of the lab workstations are currently available; along with 1 PC. LaTeX base was upgraded to the latest version (06-01). Emacs was upgraded to version 21.1.   If you are not already using auctex, see the
      previous upgrade below for info on how to include it. LaTeX just isn't the same without it.
    • Vim was upgraded to version 6.0.   Unless you've setup your own defaults, remove
      any $VIMRUNTIME or $VIM you may have. Vim will find the defaults in:  
      /inst/pkg/vim/share/vim/

    6:15pm Friday   The math cluster shuts down in Sproul for the last time.
    7:15pm Friday   The math cluster is booted up in the Surge Bldg.
    2:45pm Saturday   fsck finishes on the math cluster.
    7:38am Monday   Restoration/recovery is completed and the math cluster resumes operation.

  • 25 Feb 2001     Critical failure of PDU. Power was lost to all servers. Parts are on order.

  • 14 Feb 2001     NFS failure. Several machines were rebooted without warning.

  • 09 Feb 2001     New printer incipit installed. Accessible to all faculty regardless of OS.

  • 04 Jan 2001     The OS upgrade of the cluster machines is complete. The cluster now operates on Solaris 8.

    • AMSLaTeX has been upgraded from version 1.2 to 2.0.
    • Mail and print services are not yet available on these machines.
    • Convert your dvi files into ps or pdf files as follows:

      dvips file.dvi -o file.ps

      ps2pdf file.ps

      Viewers and other related programs are available for Windows.

  • 16 Dec 1999     While TeXing on the new machines (and of course when the new machines replace their predecessors) place regularly included tex files, bibliographies , macros, etc. into a subdirectory of your home directory named .texmf then enter the command texhash. This will allow these files to be included without having to have copies in each directory where they are required. Of course, if you have a package that others might wish to use, contact the system administrator to have it placed in the localtexmf directory. Note: you must include copies of the files used in this directory when corresponding with others.

    • A page with links to Mathematics e-Journals has been added. Requests for additions or removals should be directed to systems@math
    • There is a Department letterhead in LaTeX2.09 available for use. There is a slight problem with the seal in its original version on math and charity. It has been corrected on the new machines. Please note: this is an old macro that will cause LaTeX2e to complain bitterly, but it will still compile just fine.
