The PhD - Program

The requirements for our Ph.D. are:

A. Pass four written qualifying exams in

  1. Algebra
  2. Complex Analysis
  3. Real Analysis
  4. Topology

  At least three must be passed at the “Ph.D.” level. One may be passed at the “masters” level. The exams are based on one year sequences in the corresponding subjects, except for the Complex Analysis exam which is based on a 2 quarter sequence.

B. Take four “elective” graduate math classes in areas that are considered more advanced than the qualifying exams.

C. Pass an oral qualifying exam on a subject related to planned research.

D. Write and defend a dissertation.
