The Posada de las Flores Hotel is open, including the new tennis
court. It is expensive, but elegant. The 7th Annual
Dorado Tournament will be June 20-21, 2003. Details will be
posted at www.chivato.net and other Baja sites. Construction in
the area has not slowed down. Several upscale developments are
under construction. Ocean front lots are getting scarce
The runway is in good condition.
Posada de los Flores, formerly Hotel Punta Chivato, continues making progress toward their goal of becoming a world class resort. Everyone is impressed with the improvements and amenities being added. Pricing is comparable to other upscale resorts. Closed for lunch. Check out their website for info and a great photo tour: www.posadadelasflores.com.
The runway is in good condition. Don't land on the former runway 9-27 which is X'ed off and used for taxiway only. If high winds should dictate landing to the west, beware of electrical lines crossing the east end.
The wasboard road is as bad as ever.
The first dorado were being caught in late May. The 5th Annual Dorado Tournament is scheduled for June 16-17.
The Punta Chivato Hotel was sold and closed a year ago. The new owner has completely refurbished and reopened as Posada de las Flores. It is expensive, but first class. The owner has a hotel with the same name in Loreto. Ocean front rooms are advertised at $190 per day. The food is excellent.
A second restaurant is under construction just west of the air strip. It should be open by year end. It is going to specialize in steaks. And if that isn't enough ... construction on a "palapa restaurant" for those wanting good, inexpensive Mexican food has begun too.
Pilots be careful! The runway was badly eroded by the 6" rain September 10. You can land safely if you first make a low pass to determine where the worst erosion is, and avoid it on landing. The taxiway also has a washout that requires caution. Don't plan on useful landing information from the hotel on 122.8.
The road from the Palo Verde turnoff at Highway 1 to Punta Chivato is good depending on how long since it was last graded. It is graded about once a month, but the washboard returns after a week.
Dorado fishing has been very good the past week. Yellow fin tuna are showing up, but are hard to find.
